Your child's early childhood setting is their first step into the world of education. If this is your first experience with pre-K, you may not be sure what a three-, four-, or five-year-old should learn at school. Curricula vary by program, but most child care centers include basic academic content. Here is what parents need to know about curriculum, learning, and early childhood education.
Future schools focus on academics, but your child does not wait until kindergarten to begin. Most pre-K programs include early literacy, such as reading, writing, and communication. Math covers number identification, counting, basic equations, geometry, and units of measurement. Science touches on biology, chemistry, physics, and earth or planetary sciences. Social studies is a common pre-K area too.
Preschool is often where your child makes their first friends. They meet and play with other three- to five-year-olds. Through that play, your child practices new social skills. These include sharing, taking turns, listening, communicating, and learning how to respect other people.
As your child grows, they become more independent. That need for independence builds valuable self-care skills. Your child may already feed themselves or use the restroom at home. At school they can keep building those skills, along with dressing, such as putting on or taking off a coat, shoes, or outdoor items. They also learn responsibility for personal items like a backpack or jacket, handwashing, and other hygiene tasks.
Problem-solving does not only happen during math lessons. Your child is developing critical thinking skills that help with academic and real-world problems. Daycare activities that build these skills include a variety of hands-on explorations and experiences. From building a block tower to mixing tempera paint colors in the art area, your child solves problems throughout their day.
Creative areas include visual arts, drama, dance, creative movement and music. Open-ended activities let children explore and experiment rather than make one finished product. Drawing builds hand and finger skills. Dance builds large muscles. Some programs teach art on its own; others fold it into science or math.
In a typical day, your child moves between areas rather than sitting through one long lesson. A teacher might read a story, then set out blocks or paint. Your child counts, sorts, draws, and talks with friends. Some programs teach the creative arts on their own, while others weave them into other subjects.
Over the year, you notice small changes at home. Your child zips their own coat, washes their hands without a reminder, or tells you how they solved a problem with a friend. They may sing a song learned at school or count the stairs. These are the practical signs that the five areas are taking hold.
